Diamond Jubilee Day

75th Anniversary Celebrations

On July 1, we jubilantly celebrate two historic milestones that have shaped the landscape of higher education and engineering in Sri Lanka. Firstly, we mark the Diamond Jubilee of the Faculty of Engineering—an illustrious 75-year journey since its founding as the first Faculty of Engineering of the University of Ceylon. Secondly, we commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the establishment of the University of Ceylon itself, a pioneering institution that laid the foundation for university-level education in the country.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, are being held grandly with meaningful events and commemorative activities. These festivities are made possible through the generous support and active involvement of the Peradeniya Engineering Faculty Alumni Association (PEFAA). The celebrations officially commence on July 1, 2025—symbolically recognized as Diamond Jubilee Day—and aim to honor the Faculty’s rich legacy, recognize the contributions of its academic and professional community, and inspire the next generation of engineers to continue the tradition of excellence.

Celebrating 33 Years of PEFAA: A Legacy of Bonding, Giving, and Impactful Contributions

A thankful note by Prof. Jeewananda Keerthisena – former professor at the Faculty of Engineering, UOP.

“The Peradeniya Engineering Faculty formed its Alumni Association PEFAA in September 1991 initiated by Prof M.P. Ranaweera who was serving as the Dean of Engineering. The membership of PEFAA though mainly comprised Peradeniya Engineering Graduates was not limited to them. From its inception, the president of the Peradeniya Engineering Faculty Alumni Association (PEFAA) was elected from among PEFAA members serving in the industry.

Dr. B.M.A. Balasooriya a renowned Pera Alumni from E59 batch (entered in 1959 and graduated in 1963) was the founding president of PEFAA. He was followed by Mr. N.K. Gunawardana (E64), Mr. Parakrama Jayasinghe (E63), Mr. Mervyn Gunasekera (E71), Mr. Gemunu Silva (E63) laying a solid foundation for PEFAA activities such as providing support to needy students, book donations, contributing to academic activities through talks, seminars, field visits, and also social activities among Alumni and families.

Peradeniya Alumni show a candid bonding among themselves wherever they meet bringing alive joyful memories of campus life in breathtaking Peradeniya environs. The present committee headed by Ravi Theaver (E82) has made an impressive effort to implement the Engineering Faculty facelift and learning process improvement projects amounting to Rs 80 million in time for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

It is truly amazing to see the Alumni from E1962 to E2008 coming forward so generously to support these much-needed projects for the Pera-EFac Jubilee celebrations in July 2025. The ability to raise funds to implement these impactful projects without having to go through the University bureaucracy yet transparently speaks volumes in favor of PEFAA. As an E63 Alumni and a pioneer member, I wish to congratulate PEFAA and offer my best wishes for every success in the 33rd anniversary celebrations on 23 November 2024.”
